CHEONG WA DAE
For many years, the secrets within the walls of Cheong Wa Dae, the former residence of the President, were shrouded in mystery to the public. However, after 74 years, Cheong Wa Dae has finally opened its doors, unveiling itself as a captivating tourist attraction. Now, anyone with a curious spirit can embark on a journey to explore its premises. Your tour begins at one of the three entry gates: the Main Gate, Yeongbinmun Gate, or the Chunchumun Gate. Step inside and unravel the hidden stories and historical significance that lie within the halls of this remarkable place.
The distinguishing feature of Cheong Wa Dae, the Former Presidential Residence, is its eye-catching blue tiles adorning the Main Office, immediately capturing one’s attention. Comprising approximately 150 thousand individually baked tiles, the roof of the Main Office is built to withstand the test of time for hundreds of years. The harmonious blend of the blue tiles and the gracefully curving roofline creates a picturesque sight against the backdrop of Bugaksan Mountain. Within the Cheong Wa Dae complex, you’ll discover a collection of unique and beautifully designed buildings, including the former Main Office, Yeongbingwan (State Guest House), Chunchugwan (Spring and Autumn) Hall, Nokjiwon Garden, Mugunghwa (Rose of Sharon) Hill, and Chilgung Palace. The traditional Korean architectural style shines through each structure, adding to the aesthetic appeal. Just outside the premises, you’ll find Cheongwadae Sarangchae, an exhibition hall that offers insights into the history of Cheong Wa Dae and the Korean presidency, showcasing gifts received by heads of state over the years. This exhibition hall is open to all visitors and admission is free, providing an opportunity to delve deeper into the rich heritage of Cheong Wa Dae.
